Wrapping up a week of blogging about some of our most recent videos and sharing the lessons behind them. Today, it’s about picking the right video producer.

Let’s face it. There are TONS of people out there who can produce your video. Everyone with a smartphone in their pocket is carrying a video camera. You can even edit the video you shot on the phone as well… not recommended.

But just because everyone has the tools to shoot and edit video, it does not mean they have the ability to produce a quality video. Which leads me to today’s video, For Women, ltd.

Case Study

Dr. Javier Fajardo is a Chicago-based doctor offering gynecological and obstetrical care with a personalized touch. He was in the middle of a website redesign and decided a new video was in order.

The old video… not so good. The biggest issue was the lighting. The person shooting it clearly didn’t use their own lights and relied on the overhead florescent lights. Big mistake.

You can get away with that in certain circumstances. If there are a bunch of them and the room is truly bright… probably okay. When you have to boost your camera levels to the max and the picture still looks pretty dark… you better whip out the light kit.

Dr. Fajardo’s office isn’t poorly lit. It’s perfectly fine as a doctor’s office, but it isn’t exactly ideal as a video studio. Even putting up a single light made a world of difference. That’s what experience gets you.

On Alert for Video producer problems

I think there are a few problems to be aware of when choosing a video producer. Technology has become a crutch. The cameras are so good these days we just put too much trust in them. Next, a few classes on video production doesn’t make someone an expert. Years in the field do. Finally, I’ll just say it… some people are lazy. “Good enough” isn’t good enough.

And that’s just the technical aspect of shooting a video… I didn’t even touch on the importance of choosing a real storyteller.

Keep those things in mind the next time you pick your producer.

I love Independence Day. We’ll celebrate this weekend with pool parties, barbeques and fireworks, but the reason we get to celebrate is because 56 men signed a piece of paper that started a revolution.

They defied one of the most power monarchs in the world knowing if the revolution failed, it would cost them their lives.

In thanks to them, read the words that changed the world forever. Happy 4th of July!

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

Putting A Value On Your Video Production Costs

dollar signNo big post today… instead… I need some help. I’m actually working on a future project, and I’d appreciate input. Nobody wants video production costs that break the bank, but many view the cost as “worth” it.

My questions… how do you attach value to your videos? Also, how do you get the most value out of your videos?

Here’s where I’m going with this… I’d like to write something that will speak to business owners and help them gauge ROI when producing their own videos. I’d love some real life examples of how people are determining a value.

Biggest Cell Phone Video Mistake Being Made

cell phone videoThis is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, but it also serves as a valuable lesson for business leaders. Actually, it’s a good tip for anyone shooting video on their cell phone… which is pretty much everyone. Please shoot your cell phone video in the proper aspect ratio.

Virtually all video cameras these days shoot in widescreen 16:9, right? That’s what your flat screen TV is at home. That’s what your computer monitor is at work… your laptop… YouTube screen… et cetera. The problem is when most people shoot video on their phone, they hold it vertically… which makes your aspect ratio 9:16.

This makes for TERRIBLE video

Instead of a beautiful picture covering the entire screen, you get a narrow image in the center with all sorts of black space on the sides.

AAARRRRGGGG! It drives me insane. Nothing screams AMATEUR as much as video that looks like this.

Corporate video mistake

I see it all the time in DIY corporate videos. Heck, sometimes I see it in professionally produced corporate videos… usually when someone at the company shoots something that “must” be in the finished video. Please don’t do this. I have successfully talked a few T60 clients out of including similar video. The only, and I mean, only circumstance this is acceptable in my book is if it’s a one-time-only event. The company tested a product, someone caught it on camera and it’s awesome. Something along those line.

Anyway, consider this my public service for the day. Please, do not shoot video vertically on your cell phone. Simply turn it sideways and you’ll do yourself a world of good.

“Dancing with the Stars” Video Production Prowess

Screen shot 2013-04-01 at 10.38.44 PMI’m not a Dancing with the Stars fan. I don’t think I’ve ever watched more than 5-minutes of the show. I’m not a hater. It just isn’t my thing, but the other night I saw it on a TV and it literally stopped me in my tracks with some video production inspiration.

What caught my eye was a series of interview shots. They were interviewing people against  some pretty boring walls, but instead of shooting head-on into the wall they placed the camera up against it and shot down the wall at the interview subject. Does that make sense?

The technique was similar to the interview shots in the photos I posted here from shoots we did a while back for the Northern Illinois Food Bank and also Yellow House Children’s Services.

Screen shot 2013-04-01 at 10.37.13 PMAnyway, all of us are often faced with shooting interviews against boring backdrops. This is a way to spice things up. The change in perspective adds a lot of visual interest.

Clearly, I’ve done this sort of thing before, but seeing it on DWTS really served as a good reminder and even gave me some new ideas. They used the technique in multiple ways with the camera at different heights, the subject in profile and it all worked.

Inspiration can come from some unlikely places. That’s why you always have to keep your eyes open.

A Mission Statement That Says It All

tony-picI decided on something last week… a T60 mission statement. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while after listening to person after person talk about mission statements on the EntreLeadership podcast.

I’ve worked for my fair share of companies. I’m sure they all have mission statements but I couldn’t tell you what they are, which is why I decided to put some thought into T60’s.

I have no idea how much the company might grow, but I’d like the mission statement to have meaning and be something everyone appreciates. Heck… even if it’s just me… I’d like something that can be my guiding compass.

The best mission statements I’ve heard are short and sweet, so that’s the way I’m going. Enough teasing already? Here it is…

Marketing Videos Need Your Employees’ Passion

lincoln youtubeI can’t believe what happened to me. I just watched a “suggested post” on Facebook… i.e. a paid ad. It was a Lincoln Motor Company marketing video, and it was really good.

I hate the “suggested posts,” but the video title reeled me in… Artisans of Lincoln. The video was all about the artists who help create car designs. Pretty cool! It also reiterated a great point for me to comment on.

PASSION SELLS

People who are passionate about what they do are incredible sales people. We never see the person narrating the Lincoln video, but it sounds like it must be one of the artists or the person in charge of that division. Hearing from him and watching the artists at work, it grabs you. It isn’t fake. It isn’t over-the-top. It’s just passion and it comes through loud and clear.

You have people who work at your company who have this same passion for their job. They are the people you need in your marketing videos.

Ir’s a big week for T60. Tomorrow will be our 500th blog post. I hadn’t thought about how much content that is until a couple of friends who blog themselves were noticeably impressed. But this isn’t about “way-to-go us,” it’s about our readers. We don’t have a ton, but we appreciate everyone who’s out there.
